Transparente Spenden auf der Blockchain. Alice SI dient dazu, Organisationen und Unterstützer zu vernetzen. Im Interview erzählt Livia Enomoto, seit 2018 Projektleiterin bei Alice, mehr über dieses tolle Unternehmen.

Was ist Alice SI?

Alice ist ein soziales Netzwerk, das von der Blockchain unterstützt wird. Es hilft Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen, ihre Auswirkungen transparenter zu gestalten, und erleichtert es den Geldgebern, wirksame soziale und ökologische Projekte zu finden und zu skalieren.

Wir verwenden eine Kombination aus „Spenden nach Ergebnissen“, bei der Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen nur dann bezahlt werden, wenn sie ihre Auswirkungen belegen, und eine Anwendung für Impact-Investitionen (derzeit in der Entwicklung), die Betriebskapital für Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen zur Verfügung stellt, damit sie ihre Projekte beginnen können, und übernimmt die Gefahr, dass Projekte versagen.

 

Was macht euch einzigartig?

Die Welt hat noch nie so etwas wie Alice gesehen. Was wir bauen, ist auf mehreren Ebenen äußerst innovativ und störend:

• Transparente Wirkungsdaten: Die meisten Daten über die Auswirkungen von Sozial- und Umweltprojekten sind heute undurchsichtig, gedämpft und oft unzuverlässig. Alice schafft Anreize dafür, dass verifizierte Wirkungsdaten in der Blockchain öffentlich zugänglich gemacht werden, wodurch das Vertrauen der Öffentlichkeit in den Non-Profit-Sektor wiederhergestellt werden kann.
• Philanthropisches Crowdfunding: Crowdfunding ist bis heute ein Synonym für einmalige Aufrufe, die ein bestimmtes finanzielles Ziel erreichen wollen. Meistens gibt es nach Beendigung des Berufungsverfahrens keine Folgemaßnahmen. Alice verschiebt diese Logik, indem jedes Projekt in der Plattform die Auswirkungen beeinflusst und das Ergebnis fokussiert wird, mit Meilensteinen, die es den Spendern ermöglichen, eine Reise zu sozialen Auswirkungen zu verfolgen. Spender und Geldgeber können die genauen Auswirkungen ihres Geldes nachverfolgen und ihre Spenden zurückfordern, wenn keine Ergebnisse erzielt werden.
• Impact Investment: Impact Investment ist ein wachsender Sektor, der jedoch durch erhebliche Transaktionskosten und mangelnde Liquidität gebremst wird. Alice löst beide Probleme: Due Diligence-Kosten, Rechtskosten und Überwachungskosten werden dank Transparenz und Automatisierung durch Smart Contracts reduziert.

 

Was war der Grund, Alice SI zu gründen / was ist die Vision dahinter?

Alice wurde gegründet, nachdem ihre Gründer erkannt hatten, dass Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen, NGOs und soziale Unternehmen in einem schwierigen Finanzierungsumfeld stehen: Die Spenden sind im Westen lange Zeit stagniert, und obwohl Impact Investing als Quelle alternativer sozialer Finanzierung schnell wächst, sind sie noch lange nicht soweit, das volle Potenzial zu erreichen.

Dies ist hauptsächlich darauf zurückzuführen, dass soziale Organisationen nicht ausreichend transparent sind. Infolgedessen verlieren die Spender das Vertrauen und sind enttäuscht von der „falschen“ Transparenz: Soziale Organisationen stehen unter massivem Kostendruck, was zu Unterinvestitionen in Personal und Infrastruktur führt und den Fokus von der weitaus mehr kritische Frage entfernt: Der tatsächlichen Wirkung eines Projekts.

Parallel dazu ist das Fehlen transparenter Wirkungsdaten für institutionelle Geldgeber (Förderinstitutionen und Impact-Investoren) problematisch: Ohne sie können sie keine sozialen Projekte bewerten und diejenigen Projekte ermitteln, die am effektivsten sind. Dies führt zu unnötigen Ineffizienzen und exorbitanten Transaktionskosten.

Alice löst diese Probleme, indem es verlangt, dass alle sozialen Projekte die Ziele angeben, die sie erreichen wollen, und verlangt, dass das Erreichen dieser Ziele unabhängig überprüft und validiert werden muss. Transparenz wird durch eine förderungsbedingte Finanzierung erreicht: Nach der ersten Seed-Finanzierung, mit der die Projekte gestartet werden können, erhalten soziale Organisationen nur dann zusätzliche Mittel, wenn sie nachweisen können, dass sie ihre Ziele erreicht haben. Das Netzwerk bietet auch Anreize für den systematischen Vergleich und das Benchmarking von Projekten, um die effektivsten zu identifizieren.

 

Kannst du eine Geschichte über ein Projekt auf eurer Plattform erzählen, das den Menschen geholfen hat?

Wir haben unser erstes Pilotprojekt im Jahr 2016 durchgeführt. St Mungo’s, eine Wohltätigkeitsorganisation für Obdachlose in Großbritannien, hat einen Aufruf eingereicht, um 15 langjährigen Obdachlosen in London bei der Suche nach einer Unterkunft zu helfen und sich mit psychischen Problemen, Drogenmissbrauch usw. zu befassen. Jedes Ergebnis wurde unabhängig von bestätigt das Housing-Team der Greater London Authority (GLA). Hier waren die Ergebnisse:

– Das Pilotprojekt war eine Ausgliederung einer Social Impact Bond (SIB), die die GLA vor drei Jahren in Auftrag gegeben hatte. Alice erlaubte der Wohltätigkeitsorganisation, ihre sehr erfolgreiche Arbeit mit Obdachlosen fortzusetzen, obwohl der ursprüngliche SIB nicht mehr funktioniert;

– der Pilot half einer Person in der Kohorte, eine dauerhafte, drei Personen zu finden, um zeitweilige Wohnungen zu finden und dort länger als drei Monate zu bleiben, sowie mehrere andere Ergebnisse;

– Insgesamt wurden mehr als 13.000 Pfund gesammelt, hauptsächlich von einer kleinen, treuen Spenderbasis.

Wir haben viel von diesem Pilotprojekt gelernt, viele Neuerungen vorgenommen und sind nun mit zwei neuen Live-Appellen zum Vertrieb von Prothesen in Nepal in Partnerschaft mit AOKC und dem Bau eines Naturschutzgebietes in Russland mit Forgotten Animals zusammen.

 

Was sind eure Pläne für die nächsten drei Jahre?

Unsere Roadmap für die nächsten drei Jahre umfasst die Einführung des Impact Investment MVP, die Implementierung des dezentralisierten Markts für die Projektkurierung, den Validator-Markt und den Impex-Datenexplorer.

Some introducing words about yourself

I’m Livia Enomoto, Project Director at Alice since 2018.

 

What is Alice SI?

Alice is a social impact network powered by the blockchain. It helps charities be more transparent about their impact, making it easier for funders to find and scale effective social and environmental projects. We use a combination of „donation by results“, where charities only get paid if they provide proof of their impact, and an impact investment application (currently under development) that provides working capital to charities so they can start their projects, and underwrites the risk of projects failing.

 

What makes you unique?

The world hasn’t seen anything like Alice before. What we’re building is extremely innovative and disruptive on several fronts:

– Transparent impact data: today, most of the data about the impact of social and environmental projects is opaque, siloed and often unreliable. Alice creates incentives for verified impact data to be made publicly accessible on the blockchain, which has the potential to restore public trust in the nonprofit sector;

– Philanthropic crowdfunding: to date, crowdfunding has been synonymous with one-off appeals looking to reach a certain financial target. Most of the time, there’s no follow-up after the appeal ends. Alice shifts this logic having every project in the platform impact driven and outcome focused, with milestones that enable the donors to follow a social impact journey. Donors and funders can track the exact impact their money has achieved and request their donations back if no results are reached.

– Impact investment: impact investing is a growing sector, but it’s held back by substantial transaction costs and lack of liquidity. Alice solves both problems: due diligence costs, legal costs and monitoring costs are all reduced thanks to transparency and automation enabled by smart contracts.

 

What was the reason to found Alice SI / what is the vision behind it?

Alice was created after its founders recognise that charities, NGOs and social enterprises face a tough funding environment: donations have long been stagnant in the West, and while impact investing is growing rapidly as a source of alternative social funding, it is still far from reaching its full potential.

This is mainly due to the fact that social organisations aren’t transparent enough about their impact. As a result, donors are losing trust, and have become obsessed with the “wrong kind” of transparency: social organisations are under massive pressure to cut costs, which has led to underinvestment in talent and infrastructure and shifted the focus away from the much more critical issue of delivering real impact.

In parallel, the lack of transparent impact data is problematic for institutional funders (grant-making bodies and impact investors): without it, they can’t benchmark social projects and identify those that are the most effective, which leads to unnecessary inefficiencies and exorbitant transaction costs.

Alice solves these problems by requiring that all social projects specify the goals they are trying to achieve and mandates that the achievement of these goals has to be independently verified and validated. Transparency is enforced by making funding conditional to impact: after receiving initial seed financing with which to start their projects, social organisations only receive additional funds if they can prove that they have achieved their goals. The network also incentivises the systematic comparison and benchmarking of projects to help identify those that are the most effective.

 

Can you tell a story about a project on your platform that helped people?

We ran our first pilot in 2016. St Mungo’s, a UK homelessness charity, launched an appeal to help 15 long-term homeless people in London find accommodation and deal with mental health issues, substance abuse issues, etc. Every outcome was independently verified by the housing team at the Greater London Authority (GLA – London’s local government). Here were the results:

– the pilot was a spin-off of a social impact bond (SIB) that the GLA had commissioned three years prior. Alice allowed the charity to continue its very successful work with homeless people despite the original SIB winding down;

– the pilot helped one person in the cohort find a permanent, three people to find temporary homes and stay in them for more than three months, as well as several other outcomes;

– overall more than £13,000 was raised, mostly from a small warm donor base.

We learnt a lot from this pilot, did a lot of redevelopments and are now with 2 new live appeals covering prosthetics distribution in Nepal in partnership with AOKC and building a wildlife sanctuary in Russia with Forgotten Animals.

 

What are your plans for the next three years?

Our road map for the next three years includes the launch of the impact investment MVP, implementation of the decentralised project curation market, validator market and impact data explorer, composing Alice’s full ecosystem.
